On affuble les surdoués de nombreuses caractéristiques : hypersensibilité, empathie, sens de la justice, etc. Désormais, celles-ci font presque office de grille de diagnostic du surdon. Y a-t-il un portrait type du surdoué ? Notons qu'il n'existe pas de portait de l'individu à l'intelligence normale, alors pourquoi les surdoués s'illustreraient-ils par des traits psychologiques caractéristiques ? L'auteur propose une lecture des causes possibles entre "efficience" et "particularités psychologiques", en invalidant au passage quelques clichés tenaces : tous les surdoués ne sont pas hypersensibles et tous les hypersensibles ne sont pas surdoués.
Ils ne sont pas non plus nécessairement inadaptés ou en souffrance. Faire de telles assimilations est la preuve d'une grande méconnaissance de la diversité humaine et des multiples facteurs qui peuvent influer sur la construction d'un individu. L'enjeu de cet ouvrage, c'est d'appréhender un fonctionnement général sans nier la singularité et la souffrance de certains. Tous les surdoués ne souffrent pas, mais lorsque c'est le cas, quelles en sont les raisons ? La surefficience est-elle impliquée dans cette souffrance ? Les principales causes identifiées par l'auteur sont : le sentiment de décalage, inhérent à ce haut fonctionnement intellectuel, et la solitude éventuelle qu'il engendre.
